Last night in Edmonton, AB began a new chapter for Moloich Photography. While on my way to local venue to shoot a concert, I drove by a hall featuring a monthly OCDG (Oil City Derby Girls) showcase in Castledowns. Being that this was a new venture I was somewhat reluctant but very inquisitive as to what I would see inside the walls. Once inside I was treated with a colorful superhero display of cyclical rolling fury from the opening match between local men’s division favorites the River City Riot and their arch nemesis from my hometown of Red Deer, AB the Dreadnaughts.
River City Riot -vs- Dreadnaughts
With an old indoor hockey arena playing host to men, women and children of all ages in attendance the evening began tastefully with a stirring opening National Anthem of O Canada too seldom seen. With the final chorus sung those filling the stands erupted like soldiers heading in to battle. Stomping feet in the bleachers, screams of encouragement, hooting and hollering filled the brisk night air, the participants circling each other on the track in the pre game warm up was to see one predator sizing up the next.
Shortly after the introduction of such notable skaters as Ragnarok, Short Bus, Dr. T. Sanchez, Shogun, ShoMeYourHits, The Jester, Wingman and others came the inspection check commanded by the head official with a bone cracking – “. . .line up for inspection!” all the derby gents obeyed and lined up with core military precision of those on parade before their commanding officer. Each referee thoroughly inspected each participant, ensuring protective equipment was worn correctly and safely – also making sure the brass knuckles and thumb tacks were left in the cars outside. With the inspections finally behind us – the teams went into their pregame huddles – each formulating their strategies and hatching a plan for the ultimate undoing of the other.
