HEARTBROKE HEROES

RED DEER, AB (March 30, 2017)

Picture
The Heartbroke Heroes are a band from Red Deer AB with 2 album realeases. "The Heartbroke Heroes", released in 2011 was the bands debut album. This album was a real genre chamelion , featuring a blazing horn section in the first track"Boo Hoo Baby", a Texas Songwriters flare in tracks like "That was Then, This is now" , "I'll get home to you", & "Doin' nothing right". And on the poppy side of things, tracks like "Gimme a reason", "Time alone" and "Don't blow it all".

The band gets its versatility in music, by its versatile band members. Made up exclusively of current and former Red Deer College music instructors, the musicianship of this band is undeniable , and allows them to take a song in any direction that seems fitting.

Curtis Phagoo has recently toured Alberta and BC is a songwriters collective called "Behind the Grind", and currently curates a Songwriters Showcase series in Red Deer of the same name. In early 2016 he recorded a solo album titled "This Town" to support on his songwriters tour . The album features songs like "Lion Tamer", a twisted ballad of a Circus love triangle told by the point of view of a child. "48 avenue" a pop song about the people he's met downtown in Red Deer, and "fresh Start" a alt country story of a man who longs for a "no questions ask" existence.

Currently the band is performing and recording new material with hopes in the near future of a release.

HI STRUNG DOWNERS

CALGARY, AB (MARCH 22, 2014)

Consider it the rebranding of The Hi-Strung Downers.
Or perhaps a better way of stating it is the derockabillification of the veteran Calgary band, who have, over their career, been called everything from “rockabilly royalty” to rockabilly revivalists.

Now, though, they’re aiming to show that they can transcend that descriptor and show that while it still is very much a part of what they do it most definitely doesn’t define them.

“We’re trying to prove to the world we’re a lot more than that,” says guitarist-vocalist Greg Callsen sitting in Inglewood’s Hose and Hound with fellow guitarist Earl Garnet.

“It’s trying to have our own sound,” Garnet agrees. “Like it’s a Hi-Strung Downers song no matter what kind of genre it fits into. That was our goal behind this record.”

This record is the sophomore release for the quartet which is an 11-song offering titled Can’t Feel Good All the Time.
It shows off all of the facets and skills of the stylish and swanky crew — rounded out by bassist Joe Love and drummer Terry (T-Bone) Starchuck — and draws upon their impressive experiences in a fistful of notable western Canadian bands.
Callsen, for example, played in a number of Prairie punk and metal acts, eventually going the singer-songwriter route, before winding up in local country rockers The Ruminants, where he was scouted by the boys in his new “gang.”

And Garnet can point to a pretty fantastic rock and rockabilly pedigree that includes time in the Black Coffee Cowboys, Hurricane Felix and the Southern Twisters, and also playing guitar as the sideman for Ronnie Hayward, about whom Garnet says, “He taught me more than anyone.”

Which brings us back to the idea of a Hi-Strung Downers’ sound — one that straddles that Mason-Dixon Line between country, rock, punk and rockabilly, and one that the band have expertly bundled their experiences and emotions into on Can’t Feel Good All the Time.

It swings, it twangs, it reels and it rocks its way from piston-pumper Rev It Up and foreboding strummer Gun Shop to the plaintive piner that puts a close to it all, Why Can’t You Be Mine.

And while it’s nowhere near the collective heartbreak expression that the band’s last record, 2014’s Here She Lies, was, the new album is still, as the title suggests, not really about a courtin’ and contentment when it comes to matters of the heart.
“None of us are really in a position right now to be writing love songs,” Callsen says.
Garnet laughs. “That’s the way she goes.”

KOMODO WAGON

RED DEER, AB (JULY 02, 2014)

Not Metal, but the Metalheads might like it. Not Punk, but the Oi's might dig it. Not Indie, but it's fun to see the geeks Rock Out. Not Hardcore, cause they ain't rich kids. Not Glam, cause nobody tops Ziggy. Not Grunge cause most of those guys are dead. Just one heck of a Rock band. Call them what you will, they aren't genre snobs, just ROCKERS!

The band was started by Canadian Vocalist, Guitarist, Songwriter TROY PERLIC during his12 year tenure in Europe. Recording, Touring and generally “having a grand ol' time”, Komodo Wagon has been reincarnated with Troy's return to his native Vancouver. An All-Canadian line-up has been assembled including the swaggering Ryan Borodey on Lead Guitar and a seasoned rythm section (Marq DeSouza – Drums & Shane Love Bass) that 'll make as many parents 'run for cover' as they make heads-bang in the venues.

Komodo Wagon songs include stories and themes that examine commonplace social practices, beliefs, faiths, relationships, governments, mythology and consipiracy. Lyrics ‘challenge’ the audience / listener to examine both “the pretty” & “the ugly” sides of life in a unique but inviting manner.

The songs incorporate love, hate, sex, denial, optimism, entertainment, big city adventures and small town ideals representing the vast journey of singer / songwriter Troy Perlic’s existence thus far in life. Believability, accountability, power, melody, and even grace are the real ‘turbines’ behind Komodo Wagon. The boys wear these traits on their sleeves and it's noticably refreshing.

PREYING SAINTS

RED DEER, AB (MARCH 01, 2014)

An unsuspecting pack of bandits are walking the shadows at night; like shadows among the shadows. . .Paul Balanchuk, Greg Stefishen, Fernando Llanes and Ryan Two - Stix are at peace with the night time sky.  These men collectively form the latest greatest unified offering from the long standing Edmonton, AB music scene.  Edmonton, AB the last honest pioneering music hotspot swimming between musical production giants like Toronto and Vancouver; Edmonton ensures its successful acts are raised on the harshest of temperature extremes and similar audience accolade.  Notorious for a very selective music following, Edmonton has earned this reputation not just from longevity in the marketplace but rather promoting such acts over time like Belvedere, Choke, Jr. Gone Wild, the Smalls and SNFU.  Among these iconic bands who have cut their teeth on the Edmonton scene is found the Preying Saints and their current offering "Salvation Is Gone".  The sound of the Saints is nothing short of exceptional, as their website clearly states; two fisted, double barrelled, road worn, a bastard child of a menage a trois between country, punk, and rock and roll, The Preying Saints emerged from a world of back alleys, fast cars, and faster women. There's no act here, four souls showing their scars and giving the middle finger to the watered down rock and roll being fed to the masses.

PUNCH DRUNK CABARET

RED DEER, AB (FEBRUARY 08, 2015)

Punch Drunk Cabaret mixes rockabilly, roots, and swing into a high energy cocktail of rousing, sing-a-long choruses and dance floor packing rhythms. With seven years of club, festival, and special event performances under its belt, the band has earned a reputation as a “must-see” live act that’s equal parts audience participation and arena-rock showmanship.
With their unmistakable steampunk inspired look, Punch Drunk Cabaret features a rhythm section like no other, complete with stand-up drummer, Sean E Watts, and bassist, Twotone Teddy Roy who doubles on both electric and upright bass. Add to that, frontman Bandmeister Randy B’s gravel-throated vocals and howling Gretsch guitar and you have a sound and style that’s truly all its own.

The band’s set list features a winning mix of originals you swear you’ve heard before and cover songs like you’ve never heard before, including 80’s hits such as Hot for Teacher and Sweet Dreams (are made of this) radically rearranged as 40’s styled, guitar driven swing. The result is a formula that resonates with an incredibly wide range of music fans, encompassing roots, blues, rock, and country.

Released in the spring of 2016, Punch Drunk Cabaret’s third album, Electrik Steam Show bristles with whiskey- soaked melodies poured over bristling bump n’ grind beats, all under the direction of Juno award winning producer/ engineer Ross Nykiforuk (Sheepdogs/ Northern Pikes). Strictly focusing on live dates throughout 2017, Punch Drunk Cabaret continues to prove they are a one-of-a-kind act on the rise.

STRANGER DANGER

RED DEER, AB (JANUARY 18, 2015)

GO TO PHOTOS
Picture
If you walk past the stately columns of the Old Red Deer Courthouse and sneak by the big white van into the door around back you’ll find yourself in the midst of creative chaos.

Guttural noises accompanied by precise breakdowns in the vein of Converge or Throwdown are carried along by pounding drumming. Art supplies litter a room packed tight with amplifiers, multiple drum kits, a plaid couch and one of a cream hue.
The sonic madness is none other than Stranger Danger, churning out brash tunes in Drop C tuning.

“We’re about good times,” said Patrick Devine, a Penhold resident who plays guitar in the band. “We all really like to hang out with each other, play hardcore music and party.”

The five members span a wide age range with Devine the youngest at 19. The band is rounded out by Dylan Cave, drums, who is 21, Tanner Olsen, guitar, who is 22, Scott Ramsay, bass, who is 24, and Brett Tronnes, vocals, who is 26.

The crew is serious about high-energy performances and loves interacting with the people who come out to their shows. It’s part of what has made them an integral force in the local hard rock scene.

“We like to get personal,” said Tronnes. “We want an experience with the crowd.”

Devine started out in a band called Hollow Absence which he says “was a really crappy emo band,” with a laugh.
“Nobody took us seriously,” he said. “I don’t blame them.”

He later played in Kill the Day with his identical twin Richard and current bandmate Olsen.
“Me and Richard always dreamed about doing things like that,” Devine said.

After hanging out with Tronnes quite a bit Stranger Danger was formed.

That was three summers ago. Since then the band has made a name for itself playing in Ponoka, Edmonton, Calgary, Backfalds and Innisfail – where they opened for Sledgehammer Deathface.

Now the tables have turned and men of Danger are the ones youth have begun to look up to.
The band just came off a three-day mini-tour with Bonfire and Thresh in January.

Devine also came up with the idea for a local venue that would cater to local bands. His sister Desiree loved the idea and ran with it, and now Slumland Theatre is one of the few true venues in the entire Red Deer area, which showcases great out-of-town bands while nurturing the local scene.

For Devine his dream for Slumland was to create a force to help fund bands and showcase them to new audiences.
Cave says Slumland was key to reigniting the local scene, especially since it had been tough to get shows going.
“That was right around the time when no hall would rent to you unless you said you were having a wedding,” he said.
Tronnes, with his wavy hair styled as a grown-out Mohawk and frothy beard, looks every bit the part of lead screamer, especially as he bellows the words to songs like Second Hand Fleshlight and When in Rome.

“Growing up in Penhold gave me a really small-town mentality,” he says, adding it’s something he tries to infuse into the music. “I appreciate every show we have.”

Because Penhold didn’t have a high school that went all the way through Grade 12 it forced him to find a new group of friends in Red Deer, which ultimately led him to meeting his new bandmates.

He had played in stoner rock group Hyperilis, whose songs included numbers such as Baby Seal and Time Will Tell, but wanted a change.

He says he’s happy with the direction Stranger Danger is going and hopes he can do music professionally one day.
It’s been a fun ride so far, from Cave’s vantage point. He comes from playing with southern rockers Dusty Tucker and first filled in as a drummer when Stranger Danger was in a bind.

“I really liked what they were doing,” he said. “It’s just good old frickin’ heavy rock ’n’ roll.”
Ramsay is happy about the incline the band has been on and doesn’t want to mess with the formula.

“We want to try to keep everything groovy and get a massive amount of people moving and feeling the beats,” he said, “and stay true to how we’ve always been.”
